Meet Sondra: She's a kick ass 28 year-old dispatcher for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department in San Diego, CA! Over the last few years she has undergone a rollercoaster of transformations. She has gone from being over 300 pounds to dropping 100 to gaining 60 back and finally to where she's at now, which she considers a "happy medium."
She was recently selected as a winner of our HNS model search and got to share her story with us at our photo shoot in Venice Beach, CA. Read her inspiring interview with us and what she wants to share with our followers!:
Tell us a bit about your journey to health and self love:
Over the last couple of years, my body has undergone quite the transformation (you can see above). It has been emotional and eye-opening! I lost over 100 pounds in the span of about 2.5 years, and really struggled with the fact that I had a harder time with this new, smaller, unfamiliar body than I'd ever had when I weighed 320 pounds. Then, I began my career as a 911 Dispatcher and all of that work was no match for the maintenance that significant weight loss requires. I regained over 60 pounds, and was really depressed and upset with myself. I'm currently working to get back to a weight that makes my body FEEL good. That makes my mind feel GREAT. And I'm so grateful that I came upon HNS in 2014, because it really helped me inventory my emotions and focus on making positive, healthy changes...
"I stopped spending time obsessing over numbers on a scale or size tag, and took my joy back."
Once you lost weight, were you perceived differently by other people?
People who never knew me couldn't believe I'd ever weighed that much. Some people who did know me were amazed...others told me I've always been beautiful! People questioned the confidence I was known to have before my journey, and I didn't mind. It's so important that we do what we feel we need for ourselves....not what people think we should do.
Did you/do you experience judgements based on your appearance now even though you've come so far in your journey?
Beauty is so much more than anything you could ever purchase in a store. No magazine ad or billboard can ever truly encompass the beauty we possess when we learn to be kind to our bodies and live with the contentment of how that makes us feel.
Is there anything you want to tell our followers?
Challenge the unrealistic standards and advertising that surrounds you everyday. Strive to DO beautiful things instead of stressing yourself out trying to obtain an idealistic version of beauty, and always try to lift up others around you when you have the opportunity!
