Here at HNS, we are no strangers to body shaming. It is an issue that is so prevalent in today's society that is dominated by social media. While there has been a lot of discussion on the body shaming of "plus sized" women, there are so many people on the opposite spectrum that experience shaming as well.
Katie sat down with YouTuber and founder of Fit, Strong, and Sexy, Amanda Russell to discuss the touchy subject. Amanda, who is a fitness expert and former Olympic hopeful has had her fair share of "skinny" shaming despite being at her natural, healthy weight.
Body shaming all comes down to people's preconceived notions of how another person should look based on their own experiences. Unfortunately the interpersonal disconnect on social media allows people to think they have the right to voice their opinion on another's appearance because there is no real repercussion.
Body shaming isn't about just one body type. People of all body types experience body shaming. The harsh reality is, that no matter what you look like, there will probably always be someone who has a negative opinion. There is no real "win." The important thing is to find happiness in who you are. When you are comfortable enough with yourself, it will become more and more difficult for the opinions of others to affect that.
Katie and Amanda made a really important point that, "Healthy is not a body type. It is a lifestyle" AND health looks different on every person! Let's work together to fight body shaming and show and all-inclusive idea of healthy bodies!
